Our Sam - mine & hubby's 1st dog together. A kinder, more loyal, faithful & protective dog you
couldn't meet. We got you as a pup from the RSPCA - a shy little thing but that made us want you all
the more. I came home in a taxi with you tucked inside my jacket & your first act was to throw up in
the taxi! You & the cats were all youngsters & grew up together & you were so protective of them but
still chased any others that came into the garden. When the children were born, you were never
snappy & tolerated everything that was thrown at you - even when I used to put a paper hat on you at
Christmas! How you used to love having your christmas dinner - a bit of everything, right down to
the sprouts & stuffing! You loved to leap into the river when we took you down the woods but never
liked your baths! When Rob & I used to have "play fights" you'd join in & attack him & we could
always have a good fight with you but you never took it too far - you knew it was just good fun. I
also loved the way you'd come & lie by my side if I was lay on the floor watching tv & you'd put
your head in the small of my back - very comforting. Sadly, old age & failing kidneys meant we
eventually had to make the decision no-one wants to make. We had you cremated & for 6 years we kept
your little casket under the stairs on one of your old blankets (washed!) as that was where you used
to sleep. I'll never bury that casket because if we ever move, I want you to come with us. You'll
never be bettered. A GREAT DOG!
SAM
When you bring a pet into your life, you begin a journey - a journey that will bring you more love and devotion than you have ever known, yet also tests your strength and courage. I must caution you that this journey is not without pain. Like all paths of true love, the pain is part of loving. For surely as the sun sets, one day your dear animal companion will follow a trail you cannot yet go down. And you will have to find the strength and love to let them go. A pets time on earth is far too short - especially for those that love them. We borrow them really, just for awhile, and during these brief years they are generous enough to give us all their love, every inch their spirit and heart, until one day there is nothing left. Deep down we somehow always knew that this journey would end. We knew that if we gave our hearts they would be broken. But give them we must for it is all they ask in return. When the time comes, and the road curves ahead to a place we cannot see, we give one final gift and let them run on ahead - young and whole once more. "Godspeed, good friend" we say, until our journey comes full circle and our paths cross again.

I woke early this morning, lifted the shade
to a sky overcast and gray.
